This formative period of the game saw the birth of the first ‚amateur heroes‘ of the game. Wills, H.C.A. Harrison, Jack Conway, George O’Mullane and Robert Murray Smith emerged as warriors engaged in individual rugby-type scrimmages. The introduction of Challenge Cups was an important spur for this burgeoning sport. Intense competition and growing rivalries between clubs such as Melbourne, South Yarra, Royal Park, and Geelong began to flourish and the game developed as a result. By the 1870s the game „Victorian Rules“ had become the most popular outdoor winter sport across the state.

Journalists likened the spectators to a Roman crowd, and the players gladiators. They marvelled at the many ‘willing to brave the chill air of a winter’s afternoon to witness the match‘. On any given weekend, and in all weather, AFL stadiums are packed with supporters. Australian football, or to be more accurate, supporting the Collingwood Football Club, has been central to my family’s life for five generations, spanning from 1892 through to the present. My family have spent their weekends packing scarves, raincoats and food, as well as travelling long distances, if necessary, to watch our team play. During this time there has been a Depression, two world wars, a cold war, a cultural revolution, the ‘space race’ and the move from the Industrial age to the Digital age.
Football, Australian Rules
For a newcomer to Australia, finding a team to follow allows you to fit in and feel comfortable. As a ‘Magpies Tragic’, l bless the day that Patty uttered those fateful words ― „Yes… as long as you barrack for Collingwood!‘. My family arrived in Melbourne on 10 September 1951; I was aged 10. We were sent to the Ballarat migrant camp in October of that year.
Did football exist before 1992?
"Scientific" football is first recorded in 1839 from Lancashire and in the modern game in rugby football from 1862 and from Sheffield FC as early as 1865. The first side to play a passing combination game was the Royal Engineers AFC in 1869/70.
They assumed that cricketers wanting a winter game would take up football, and most of the early clubs sprang from cricket clubs and played on cricket fields. This is volume 1 in a series of four volumes about the origins of Australian football as it evolved in Victoria between 1858 and 1896. This volume addresses its very beginnings as an amateur sport and the rise of the first clubs. Invented by a group of Melbourne cricketers and sports enthusiasts, Australian Rules football was developed through games played on Melbourne’s park lands and was originally known as „Melbourne Football Club Rules“.

Traditionally the preferred club of rural Victorians, Geelong represents the cockiness of bush-dwellers in the face of their grim city cousins. Geelong’s early administrator Charles Brownlow is honoured in the name of the AFL’s best-and-fairest award. I regularly drove to Adelaide and on https://www.austriansoccerboard.at/topic/110005-sommertheater-2017/page/675/ one Easter Saturday I procured tickets to the Adelaide Crows/Carlton game at Football Park. My car was fairly new and of course had a Victorian number plate.
The term ‘barracker’ was coined in the 1870s and referred to the act of barracking ― shouting abuse or encouragement to players and officials. Initially it was a derogative term, applied to working-class spectators. Selecting clothes might be considered a routine where little conscious thought is given before and after the act. However, as football supporters, selecting the ‘right’ clothes that have some sort of symbolic meaning (for example, a lucky scarf or jacket) to wear to the football is part of the rituals of following a football team. In any case, these seminal rules, which were regularly refined thereafter, formed the basis of the game and made Australian Football the oldest codified form of football in the world. They considered various rules relating to rugby, soccer and Gaelic football.
Bounce after bounce, game after game we ran and handballed. They stood in their positions – as effective as the Maginot Line, only less mobile. The goal umpire was frozen with his mouth open, dribbling chewing tobacco down his off-white coat (he was the local barber).
In New South Wales and Queensland rugby union and league continued to be the most popular types of football. Do you agree with the National Museum of Australia that the first organised game of Australian Rules football is a defining moment in Australian history? Football, along with its rules and regulations, was developed in Britain in the 19th century. Through war, the Empire, and other methods, Britain brought the sport of football to over 60 per cent of the world’s population. Certainly, sport has played an integral role in the social, economic, cultural, and even political history of Britain for centuries. It is woven into the heritage of cities, towns, communities, and families.
